Survey Finds More Nurses Use Mobile Devices

A survey of more than 1,000 nurses, most of them nurse educators with advanced degrees, revealed that 74.6% were smartphone or tablet computer owners. Researchers from Springer Publishing also found that 68.4% are on Facebook, while 37.3% are on LinkedIn. “These findings indicate the rapid growth of mobile technology use among those in the health care industry,” a company official said.

The Gulf Between Doctors and Nurse Practitioners

Not long ago, I attended a meeting on the future of primary care. Most of the physicians in the room knew one another, so the discussion, while serious, remained relaxed.

Toward the end of the hour, one of the physicians who had been mostly silent cleared his throat and raised his hand to speak. The other physicians smiled in acknowledgment as their colleague stood up.

“Nurse practitioners,” he said. “Maybe we need more nurse practitioners in primary care.”

AONP Board Member, Patti Wheaten, Receives 2013 AANP Nurse Practitioner State Award for Excellence

Patti Wheaten, AONP Tulsa Region Representative, will be awarded the 2013 AANP Nurse Practitioner State Award for Excellence at the 2013 AANP National Conference. This prestigious award is given annually to a dedicated nurse practitioner in each state who demonstrates excellence in their area of practice.

Patti began her nursing career in 1984 at Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech obtaining her LPN license. She completed a BS in Nursing from OU in 1988. She earned her certificate as a Women’s Healthcare Nurse Practitioner from the University of Texas in 1991, while working as a nurse at the Pottawatomie County Health Department in Shawnee. Patti pursued her mission of treating and educating women at various practices across Oklahoma and New Mexico.

She returned to school in 2002, earning a Master’s of Science in Nursing from OU. She opened her private practice clinic, Faith Women’s Clinic, in October 2003, in Glenpool, OK. Recognizing the need for basic care in women’s health, Patti returned to school and earned a certificate as a Family Nurse Practitioner from George Washington University in 2005. In January 2007, Faith Women’s Clinic moved to Jenks, Oklahoma, and became Faith Family Clinic.

In addition to her passion for women’s healthcare, Patti is quite the farmer. She enjoys gardening, canning the harvest from her garden and tending her goats and chickens.

Patti will be honored June 21, 2013 at the AANP National Conference, in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she receives a complimentary registration.

AONP Board member, Mindy Whitten, has been named to the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)

We are happy to announce that AONP Board member, Mindy Whitten, has been named to the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). Selection to the Internal Medicine Board is a significant honor as it recognizes leadership in healthcare. Participants in the Warren Clinic CPCI program submitted Mindy’s name. She was chosen from numerous applicants and is the first non-physician provider on this national Board.

Dr. Whitten, DNP, APRN-CNP, FAANP, is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner, in private practice in Tulsa, at Warren Clinics. She is active in AONP, serving as president twice; is on the Advance Practice Advisory Council with the Oklahoma Board of Nursing as the legislative chair. At the national level, she serves as AANP state representative and is a fellow of AANP. Currently, Dr. Whitten serves on the Physician Advisory Council with Warren Clinics, as well as the Quality Improvement Council, and is part of the CPCI project.

Grants and scholarships

2017 Grants and Scholarship Application Cycle Announced – Applications for the 2017 AANP Grants and Scholarship cycle will open February 1 and close March 15. Grants are available to AANP members who are practicing in an NP role. Applicants must be certified nurse practitioners or graduate students expected to complete their projects in 2018. Scholarships are available to AANP members currently enrolled in an accredited graduate school in pursuit of an advanced degree or certification AND scheduled to complete an eligible NP program between Fall 2017 and Summer 2018. Scholarship applicants must be licensed as a registered nurse. Applicants may receive up to $2,500 in funding. Only completed applications will be accepted and reviewed. Please review the grant and scholarship information sheets to learn more about eligibility criteria and required documents. All application submissions must be made through the online system available February 1, 2017.
