EKG Interpretation Workshop

Learning Objectives:

• Develop a systematic approach to the interpretation of a 12-lead EKG. Content: Rate, rhythm, Axis, hypertrophy, infarction.
• Discuss abnormalities seen on a 12-lead EKG that might be indicative of heart block, conduction defects, cardiac ischemia, injury and infarction. Content: Prolonged pr and QRS interval, T wave inversion, ST depression, Q waves.
• Interpret sample 12-lead EKG’s. Content: myocardial infarction, ischemia, injury, 1^st degree AV block, 2^nd degree AV block.

Abstract:

The 12-lead ECG is a useful tool, often employed by nurse practitioners to assess for evidence of cardiac disease. Designed for the nurse or nurse practitioner performing and interpreting 12-lead electrocardiograms, this 3 hour, hands-on workshop will enhance your skills.  The instructor will help you to develop a systematic approach to 12-lead EKG interpretation.  In addition, abnormalities that might be indicative of heart block, various conduction defects, cardiac ischemia, injury and infarction will be reviewed.

About Dr. Coleman:

Dr. Coleman is the Program Director at OU Health. As the program director for the family medicine and sports medicine program OU Medical Center, he is in charge of 38 residents and fellows learning family medicine and primary sports medicine.

He is a Professor at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine where he is the Director of both the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program and the Family Medicine Residency Program.

Dr. Coleman provides medical care to athletes of all ages from “Weekend Warriors” to high school, university and professional players. He enjoys teaching, both in the classroom and clinic setting, and has given numerous presentations to on-campus and community groups. He performs multiple injections and teaches injections with and without ultrasound guidance.

Dr. Coleman serves as Colonel in the United States Army National Guard and has been deployed to Iraq, Egypt, twice to Afghanistan and most recently to Ukraine.

He’s an avid runner who is close to meeting his goal of completing marathons in all 50 states.

Abstract:

Lecture, discussion, and case study presentation, assisted by computer generated visual effects, will be designed to assist the primary care provider with the early identification of patients at risk for target organ damage from hypertension, classes of antihypertensive medications designed to attenuate/avoid target organ damage, and mechanisms to evaluate impact of these medications and their potential adverse effects. Interactive case studies will enhance and cement the knowledge gleaned from the discussion and apply newest hypertension guidelines.

Abstract:

Asthma is a common disease in children and adults that causes extensive morbidity and impaired quality of life. As primary care clinicians (PCCs) increase their ability to select appropriate inhaler therapy and assess asthma control, patient outcomes are expected to improve. PCCs need education on navigating the landscape of treatment access for patients with asthma so that patients can receive optimal therapy. PCCs also need to remain updated as to recent FDA approvals for asthma therapy, including the recent approval of a new combination inhaler to prevent and treat asthma exacerbations. Consequently, education of PCCs to address these gaps is needed so that unmet needs can be addressed, and outcomes improved.

Diabetes: Case Studies in Continuous Glucose Monitoring

Most patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) have their disease managed by primary care clinicians (PCC), making PCCs a critical audience to educate regarding the use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems
and ambulatory glucose profiles (AGP). Many clinicians want to see real world applications of this technology, and this presentation, with a series of case studies, shows just how impactful CGM can be in easing the burdens faced by their patients with diabetes.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from East Central University, her master’s degree from OU, and her DNP from Oklahoma City University.

El Rassi, MD is a board-certified otolaryngologist (ENT) at OU Health with fellowship training in rhinology and skull base surgery.

Dr. El Rassi earned his medical degree from the OU College of Medicine in Oklahoma City. He then completed residency in otolaryngology – head and neck surgery at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, OR followed by a fellowship in rhinology and skull base surgery at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts where he also held an appointment as a Clinical Instructor at Harvard Medical School.

My educational journey began in 2004 when I enrolled in a Registered Nurse program. I attended Devry University’s School of Nursing and completed my BSN in 2007. I was accepted into the Master of Science in Nursing program at the University of Central Arkansas and graduated in December 2010. I passed my APRN exam 2011 and continued my educational journey, completing my post-graduate FNP in 2014, while working as an ICU Hospitalist at St John Medical Center. Debi has been a nurse for over thirty years, and an Advanced Practice Nurse for more than twenty five years. Much of her clinical background includes Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, as well as Pediatric Surgery, Intensive Care, Neonatology, and Trauma nursing, as well as education.

Recently, Debi has served both short term and intermediate term in Haiti and Zambia, with multiple short term trips for pediatric cardiac surgery, cleft lip and palate repairs, and general medical care for all ages. She retired after many years as a labor and delivery nurse to become a family nurse practitioner in a rural private practice and currently provides care for veterans with complex, chronic medical conditions. She has been a nurse educator since 2014 and focuses on delivery of primary care across the lifespan to a diverse patient population. She is a native of southeastern Oklahoma which inspires her interest in rural health care.
